Belva Rae Staples was born in Huntington, Indiana. When she was four years old, her family moved to California, where she lived for the rest of her life. She started writing at age 13 and began publishing articles in newspapers and magazines as early as 1925. In 1941 Belva was hired by the San Francisco Examiner newspaper to a position as a freelance writer
